Contact your local authority for a registration of building You should contact the local building inspector within your local authority to make a registration for installation at least three weeks before a change or installation of a pellet boiler or stove. A building permit may also be required for your pellet storage, depending on how the storage will be built or situated.
Energy Advisory Service with your Local Authority Should be able to give you answers to your questions about different heating alternatives, grants and how to proceed etc. Within the UK the ‘Energy Savings Trust´ are a very useful resource regarding the use of biomass and available funding.
The Certified Chimney-Sweeper
Modern systems have controls which can alter the combustion that changes and installations can now be carried out within the EU by certified installers, so this has greatly decreased the risk of fire using biomass heating systems. For example, chimneys are now typically hydrostatically tested before being used to make sure that they are not leaking etc. However, ignoring the suggestions and recommendations of the qualified chimney sweeper can of course be highly dangerous. According to the rule book, the chimney-sweeper should make two visits per year, but there are also houses where sweeping needs to be carried out up to three times per year. In 2005, within Sweden for example, a new rule was implemented that a fire-protection control inspection has to be performed within all houses with some form of combustion appliance.
The Installer
Helps you choose which type of biomass boiler, burner or stove can fit into your house. Remember to always ask for a written quote/estimate on everything concerning the investment and installation. Various grants and subsidies are available throughout Europe today on everything from the sourcing of biomass heating systems, right through to the installation and subsidy on each kWh produced, so make sure you also check what is available with your local authority.

First and foremost always ask for help from experts regarding all of the system controls and actions to be performed regarding your heating installation if you are not sure. For installation of pellet stoves, pellet burners and boilers, the opinions of an expert should be always be collected. Always talk to a chimney-sweeper, the environment and building control experts within your local authority and your installer.

• Do I have room?
• To replace one cubic metre of oil, approximately 3 cubic metres of pellets are required, so it is important that the house has a dedicated boiler room or even an adjacent room if you have planned to have a bulk storage. Normally you will need storage of at least 7-8 cubic metres to receive 3 tons of pellets. As a start you could choose weekly storage and then invest in bulk storage at a later stage.
• Include within your installation a flue-gas thermometer. This will allow you to easilly see when the temperature is rising and also when it is time to clean the system.
• Have control over the draft in the chimney with a draft limiter.
• The flue-gases from the boiler should be at least 150-170 degrees at an angle of approximately 65-70 degrees and about 1m down inside the chimney from the roof so as to avoid condensation within an older chimney. A newer combustion system installation typically using pellets normally has very low flue-gases so look out for that. (a controlled check by the installer should be made during installation.)
• At the time of installation the system should always be adjusted with a flue-gas instrument and not only with the help of the human eye. When the installation is in place and has been adjusted with a flue-gas instrument, ask for a print out of the control measurement results from the installer. There you should be able to read values such as CO,O2, CO2, combustion efficiency, draft, flue-gas temperature etc.

Combustion
Combustion requires oxygen supply and fuel (fuel = pellets 6-8mm). The oxygen is collected from the combustion air (the fan inside the burner takes its oxygen from the air supply valve within the boiler room) but there is also some oxygen within the biomass itself that can be used at combustion. It is important with the right fuel/air mixture is created to get the best desired combustion results. One good rule is not to use a higher effect than is necessarily required for your existing energy needs. If the stages of effect within your system is for example; 10, 15 and 20 kW, you should stay at 10 kW effect until the energy needs are fulfilled at this setting. At this lower effect the flue-gases are cooled more effectively inside the boiler and this then means a higher efficiency of the boiler. The operating time of the burner also gets longer and the standing still periods become shorter. As a result the losses in energy during the standing still period then decrease (these losses are caused by the boiler being cooled by the intake of cold air during the standstill) and this is an important factor which also contributes to improved system efficiency.
Example:
The ThermOmatic CBJ is an electronic, automatic temperature control unit for water born radiators and underfloor heating systems. It consists of a motor with a built-in micro processor based control centre. The control centre has three lights indicating when it opens and closes, when it has reached the end position and when errors have occurred. It has room and flow sensors whose signals are processed within the microprocessor. The only settings that then need to be adjusted by the user are the choice of indoor temperature and maximum flow temperature. Installation is made easy with a universal mounting kit.
• The supplied air valve inside the boiler room should have an area which corresponds to the size of the chimney being used.
• Finally remember that a newly-installed biomass heating installation should have been inspected by a certified chimney-sweeper before it is put into operation.
